Although he was beaten more than five lengths in the 1926 Epsom Derby - for which he started favourite - by Coronach, Colorado beat that colt in the other three races in which they met. His jockey, for one, was certain that he would have at least been closer at Epsom if he had not been tied down by waiting orders. Colorado, whose two-year-old successes included the Coventry Stakes at Ascot, finished ahead of Coronach by five lengths in the 2,000 Guineas and, after having taken a long time to re-find his form after the Derby, he was again much the better of the pair in the Princess of Wales's Stakes and Eclipse Stakes and he eventually retired to stud as the winner of nine races, worth £30,358. Colorado died after only two seasons at stud, but in that short time he sired the Ascot Gold Cup winner Felicitation, Eclipse Stakes winner Loaningdale, Scarlet Tiger, who was third in the St. Leger, the top sprinter Coroado and the very versatile Colorado Kid.
