Contents 1 Refereeing career 1.1 Card statistics 2 References 3 External links Refereeing career Jones was promoted to the Football League list of referees in 1997, his first match in charge being Mansfield Town against Hull City on 9 August of that year. His first games at Wembley Stadium were also in 2007; the League 2 play-off final between Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town, and the FA Trophy final contested by Stevenage Borough and York City. In 2008 he became a Select Group referee, allowing him to officiate games in the Premier League. His first match in England's top league was Hull City versus Wigan Athletic on 30 August of that year. Perhaps Jones's heaviest public criticism came after refereeing a fixture between Sunderland and Liverpool on 17 October 2009. The match was won 1-0 by Sunderland but the only goal of the game became an instant and timeless YouTube and blooper-video hit as a shot by Darren Bent took a heavy deflection off a beach ball, diverting Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina's attention, and found its way into the back of the net. Jones allowed the goal to stand, despite the laws of the game suggesting he should have awarded a dropped-ball.[1] Card statistics Season Games Total per game Total per game 1997/1998 29 68 2.34 2 0.07 1998/1999 33 82 2.48 4 0.12 1999/2000 38 82 2.16 5 0.13 2000/2001 34 68 2.00 10 0.29 2001/2002 36 111 3.08 9 0.25 2002/2003 30 76 2.53 3 0.10 2003/2004 33 103 3.12 8 0.24 2004/2005 37 88 2.38 7 0.19 2005/2006 39 109 2.79 5 0.13 2006/2007 41 160 3.90 12 0.29 2007/2008 45 134 2.98 7 0.15 2008/2009 38 110 2.89 6 0.16 2009/2010 33 110 3.33 5 0.15 [2](There are no available records prior to 1997/1998) References ^ http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8308907.stm ^ http://www.soccerbase.com/refs2.sd External links Wikimedia Commons has media related to: Mike Jones (referee) v · d · ePremier League referees Atkinson · Attwell · Clattenburg · Dean · Dowd · Foy · Friend · Halsey · Jones · Marriner · Mason · Oliver · Probert · Taylor · Walton · Webb Mike Jones Referee Statistics at soccerbase.com
