Uttara with Abhimanyu as he leaves for the war Not to be confused with Uttara (Mahabharata). In the Hindu epic Mahabharata, Uttarā or Anglicized as Uttara (उत्तरा) was the daughter of King Virata, at whose court the Pandavas spent a year in concealment during their exile. She was the sister of Uttara (उत्तर). She married Arjuna's son Abhimanyu. She was widowed at a very young age when Abhimanyu was killed in the Kurukshetra war. Her son, Parikshit, was the sole surviving dynast of the Kuru clan and eventually became king of Hastinapura. It is also believed that Uttara had learnt dance from Arjuna as a princess during the 13th year of exile of the Pandavas when Arjuna lived a life of a eunuch and practiced his art of dance learnt from the apsaras in heavens. It is during this phase that Arjuna admired Uttara's qualities and later proposed her marriage to his son Abhimanyu. v • d • e Mahabharata Kuru Kingdom Santanu · Ganga · Bhishma · Satyavati · Chitrāngada · Vichitravirya · Ambika · Ambalika · Vidura · Dhritarashtra · Gandhari · Shakuni · Pandu · Kunti · Madri · Yudhisthira · Bhima · Arjuna · Nakula · Sahadeva · Duryodhana · Dushasana · Yuyutsu · Dushala · Draupadi · Hidimbi · Ghatotkacha · Ahilawati · Subhadra · Uttara · Ulupi · Chitrāngadā  · Abhimanyu  · Iravan · Babruvahana · Barbarika · Parikshit  · Janamejaya Other characters Karna · Drona · Amba · Vyasa · Krishna · Satyaki · Dhristadyumna · Sanjaya · Virata · Kichaka · Kripa · Ashwatthama · Ekalavya · Kritavarma · Jarasandha · Mayasura · Durvasa · Jayadratha · Balarama · Drupada · Hidimba · Shalya · Adhiratha · Shikhandi Other Mahābhārata and the Indian caste system · Avatars · Pandava · Kaurava · Hastinapur · Indraprastha · Kingdoms · Kurukshetra War · Bhagavad Gita This Hindu mythology-related article is a stub.
