Aldinga marks the southern extent of the Adelaide urban growth boundary. Aldinga is well known for its long flat beaches on the Gulf St Vincent on the western side of Fleurieu Peninsula. Aldinga was a flourishing settlement during the 1860s, when it served as a port for the Fleurieu Peninsula. Aldinga Post Office opened around 1851 and closed in 1992.[2] Tourism Aldinga is a small bayside fishing resort. Tourist attractions include a surfing beach and an off-shore reef supporting sea grasses and sponges - a favourite haunt of divers. Nearby Maslin Beach has the distinction of being the first in Australia to officially welcome nude bathing. Leaflets are available to guide hikers through the bush trails of the Aldinga Scrub Conservation Park. Local Political Issues In the last couple of months, there have been a few protests at the beach regarding the councils decision to restrict car access[citation needed]. Including a winter ban and putting up wood posts out the front of the surf life saving club. A majority of the locals do not want cars banned off the beach, while a minority do[citation needed]. Aldinga Bay Coastcare is worried about what environmental damage the cars do.
