Sri alamgir translated from the Urdu language literally means Sri Inn, which is an Inn for acting as a stoppage point for transportation and traders bound upon the Grand Trunk road spanning across northern India and Pakistan. The town itself is located in northern Punjab, Pakistan. Sri alamgir is located on the east bank of the Jhelum river (largest of the five rivers of the Punjab) and is on the opposite bank of the ancient town of Jhelum. Historically Sri Alamgir has been a host for traders and travelling as an Inn since it was founded in Medieval times during the reign of Sher Shah Suri (1486, Sasaram–May 22, 1545 Kalinjar) (Pashto: شیر شاہ سوری - Šīr Šāh Sūrī). It was founded by the Grand Trunk road constructed by suri for convenience during such trans subcontinental rule during Suri's period. Today it is an Agricultural town thriving as the main industry although Textile produce and Ghee (clarified butter ) are also contributions. A population count from a 1998 census stands at 10,000.
