(December 2009) Aliança da Terra (land alliance in English) is a Brazilian non-governmental organization that advocates environmentally responsible land management in the Amazon Rainforest. Aliança da Terra was founded in 2004 by American-born cattle rancher, John Cain Carter. [1] Aliança da Terra seeks market-based solutions to slow the rapid deforestation of Brazilian forests. The organization provides economic incentives to encourage farmers and ranchers in the Amazon Rainforest to practice sustainable forest management.[2] Some of Aliança da Terra's programs include a registry of landowners who practice sustainable forest management, and a product certification for beef produced from environmentally friendly cattle ranches.
