The track contains an interpolation from "Blue Monday" by New Order, embracing a noticeable rock-oriented sound.[2] It was released as the second single from the album in some markets in June 2007 (see 2007 in music).[3] The song reached #1 on the Billboard dance charts.[4] Contents 1 Critical reception 2 Chart performance 3 Music video 4 Formats and track listings 5 Charts 5.1 Year-end charts 5.2 Certifications 6 References Critical reception The song received mixed reviews from music critics upon its release. Slant Magazine found that the song did not live up to its campy title,[5] and The Village Voice described it as simultaneously "goofy and sexually daring".[6] Allmusic, however, referred to it as "a sleek, forthcoming proposition…as undeniable and rocking as Sugababes' 2002 UK smash 'Freak Like Me'."[7] "Shut Up and Drive" earned an award in the People's Choice Music Awards for "Most Popular R&B Song".[8] Chart performance "Shut Up and Drive" debuted at number eighty-eight on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, and reached a peak of number fifteen several weeks later failing to match the success of previous single "Umbrella".[9] It also peaked at number ten on the U.S. Billboard Pop 100. The song became Rihanna's seventh number one song on the Hot Dance Club Play chart (issue date/week ending December 8, 2007). She currently holds the second longest run of consecutive number Dance hits along with more established artists Madonna and Janet Jackson. To date this single has sold 1.26 million digital downloads going platinum in the US certified by the RIAA. The song has sold 2,000,000 paid digital downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen Soundscan It achieved moderate success in Europe, notably Switzerland and Sweden, peaking at number-fourteen and number thirty-one, respectively. It was also a success in countries such as Finland, Greece, Netherlands and Ireland where it peaked within the top 5. In countries such Belgium and Norway, the song managed to peak within the top 20 of their respective singles charts. In the UK, "Shut Up and Drive" peaked at number five, becoming Rihanna's fifth UK top ten single. "Shut Up and Drive" also reached the top ten in Canada peaking at number six on the Canadian Hot 100. In Australia, "Shut Up and Drive" debuted and peaked at number-four on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart, becoming the album's second top 5 single there, and was certified gold by ARIA for sales of over 35,000 units. "Shut Up and Drive" has sold 235,000 in the U.K copies to date. Music video The song's music video is directed by Anthony Mandler and choreographed by Tina Landon. It opens with Rihanna driving a Ferrari F430 into a garage. Other cars featured in the video include a 1969 Ford Mustang and extensively modified Skoda Rapid.[10][11] The video was shot in a makeshift junkyard in Prague, Czech Republic,[12] hence the large amount of junked European cars on set and the Czech registration plate on the Ferrari; premiered on MTV's Total Request Live on July 4, 2007. On July 9, 2007, it debuted on the TRL countdown at number ten and had peaked at number four as of August 20, 2007.
