National Highway NH7 passes through Yelahanka and newly constructed NH7 passes through the north eastern fringes of Yelahanka. State Highway 9 (Bangalore - Hindupur) passes through Yelahanka bisecting the suburb into Old Town and New Town. Yelahanka has became one of the main business centres of Bangalore City. People come from towns and villages around it to shop and to visit places like banks. Yelahanka's business areas are Hospital Main Road and BB road in Yelahanka and in the new town are 16th 'B' Cross Road and Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Road. Yelahanka has lakes surrounding it, the prominent ones being Yelahanka Kere and Puttenhalli lake which has officially been declared a bird sanctuary. Geography Yelahanka is at a height of about 915 meters above sea level. It is lush green and has pleasant weather year round due to its elevation. The summer season lasts from March to mid-May, with a temperature in the range 20-35 degrees Celsius At the end of May, the monsoon season starts and lasts until the end of October. There are about 45 inches of rain annually. Winters are mild and last from November to February, with a temperature in the range 14-24 degrees Celsius. Demographics As of 2001[update] India census[1], Yelahanka had a population of 93,263. Males constituted 54% of the population and females 46%. The literacy rate was 75%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy was 80%, and female literacy was 68%. Elebven percent of the population were under 6 years of age. Connectivity Road Yelahanka is connected with downtown Bangalore through a network of roads and a six lane dual carriageway highway. The same highway connects Yelahanka with Bangalore International Airport. BMTC (Bangalore Municipal Transport Corporation), KSRTC, APSRTC serve Yelahanka with its network of buses. There are regular BMTC Volvo A/C Bus services and other buses to Bangalore from Yelahanka. Train Yelahanka Jn. (code YNK) is a junction railway station of South Western Railway, served by Indian Railways. The station lies on the train line connecting Bangalore with North, West and Central India via Guntakal Junction. There are two routes merging at the station - one from Yeshwantpur (YPR) and the other from Byapanahalli - KR Puram (KJM). Almost all major express and passenger trains halt at the station,connecting it to all major cities and towns in the country. There are passenger train services which connect Yelahanka to nearby towns and other suburbs of Bangalore. Yelahanka has a computerized Indian Railway ticket booking office. Air Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) is about 18 klometers from Yelahanka.
