He was formally a fighter for the Quad City Silverbacks of the International Fight League. McGivern was involved in many activities at the University of Iowa, including Air Force ROTC and campus ministries, receiving a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. But mixed martial arts always retained a pull on his attentions, and his competitive juices led him to more serious training and eventually a spot on Miletich’s squad. Upon graduation, Ryan spent time working for John Deere Seeding Group prior to joining the Rock Island Arsenal. McGivern lists his interests as snowboarding, reading, writing fantasy adventure stories, and dancing.
