Mukhtar Ahmad Junejo Former Judge, Supreme Court of Pakistan Born 2 September 1940 (1940-09-02) (age 70) Sindh, Pakistan Nationality Pakistani Introduction Honorable Mr. Justice Mukhtar Ahmad Junejo is a former Pakistani Supreme Court judge, and was also the Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan in 1997. He has also remained the member of Parliament of Pakistan, but refused to sit in the bench. He is the member of syndicate, University of Sindh, Jamshoro. Career He completed his B.A/ L.L.B at Karachi and was a lawyer of Karachi and Lahore also. He was appointed as the Session Judge of Sindh High Court in the end of 1980s. He was presented as a judge in the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 1994. He was also selected as The Chief Election Commissioner. But some problems arose with the political parties of Pakistan and he refused to sit at the bench of Pakistani Parliament (Majlis-e-Shoora). There has always been a tacit understanding that the prime minister and the president should be from different provinces. With Tarar's appointment, that tradition has been ignored, to the chagrin of Sindh, Baluchistan and the NWFP. Although Tarar had taken his oath of office, his election was to be overturned by the court. In fact, former Election Commissioner Mukhtar Ahmed Junejo rejected Rafique Tarar's nomination in December because of the accusation that he had been charged with contempt of court in the past and hence was ineligible to hold this office. Subsequently, Nawaz Sharif removed Junejo and replaced him with Abdul Qadeer Chaudhri, who approved the nomination of Tarar. References 1. 2. 3.
